Perfect Picture: Academic Regalia Preparation

Graduation is one of the most important events that you will remember for the rest of your life. This day culminates the years you struggled, as a student, to get your degree. I remember the day when I graduated in high school; there was not a minute that my friends and I would not stop and smile for the camera. Taking pictures is a way for us to remember this special day forever.

Moreover, knowing that this is a piece in our lives that will be immortalized, it is understandable that we all wanted to look good in the pictures and in real life. To look good, you must be prepared. This usually entails that you have to make sure that your academic regalia caps, hoods, tassels and gowns are in place.

The Cap

You do not want your cap falling off every now and then, so make sure that you secured it properly. Use a few bobby pins to do this.

The Gown

This is one of the most important parts in an academic regalia. To ensure that it will look perfect during the ceremony, take the gown out of the bag an hour before you leave. You will see that it will be full of wrinkles. The solution for this is the following:

(1) You can always iron it
(2) hang it up (although this sometimes does not work and does nothing to solve the problem)
(3) Take a hot shower and hope that the steam will release some of the wrinkles.

The Tassel

Okay. Some may find this part quite easy, but I actually got frustrated while trying to get the tassel hooked around the button on the cap. Some caps have markings at the back and front; however, for those that do not have one, you can mark it to help you hang the tassel on the correct side. Remember, you want the tassel to hang on the right side of the cap.

The Shoes

People will be taking pictures of you as you walk on the stage. Take in mind that they can take a photograph of you from head to foot, so make sure to wear proper footwear. You can wear from closed shoes to high heels. One more thing, make sure to wear comfortable shoes. It shows in your face whenever you wear an ill-fitted and uncomfortable shoes and believe me, it will show in your photographs as well.

In addition to the whole academic regalia is the underneath outfit. This part is tricky. Some graduates, most especially men, does not give importance to the dress they are wearing under their gowns. Well, let me tell you, you will not be wearing your academic regalia the whole ceremony. So make sure to wear something comfortable. For guys, they are usually required to wear pants and a white shirt. Dresses and skirts are for girls. To have more options, you can check out this website, GradShop.com.

This is a happy occasion, so let it reflect in all your photographs. Get your academic regalia prepared ahead of time in order for you to look your best. Remember, this is your moment, so just take in the moment and enjoy!
